Hi, This application is great - thank you. The only problem I've found is that I lose the clarity of the visuals I have in my original PDF document when I use your program. Is there any way that I can avoid this as I unfortuately wont be able to use jpdfbookmarks if I can't find a solution...

Thanks so much

Kate

Hello, thank you for your message please send me a pdf file that shows the problem so that I can find a solution. Use my e-mail to attach the file, it is in the README file of the program or in the about box.

As you probably know, the bookmarks created by Apple's Preview program are machine specific and, therefore, not embedded into the pdf file. Since the primary point of bookmarks is to facilitate navigation by the user of the file (regardless of the machine it is being stored on), I can't imagine anyone at Apple thinking its approach would be very useful.

Anyway, without buying Acrobat or some similar commercial software, your program is the only one I have found which will do this simple task (I've tried Skim and, quite frankly, its bookmark function just seems to not work, period). I would hope that there would be some way for you to keep this project going. I am going to make a donation, but such will probably be too little, too late.

Thanks for all your work to date.

Regards,
Redynstruc

So I made a donation, but it wasn't easy. The PayPal page displayed itself in Italian (?) and I would not find the United States listed because, obviously, it isn't called the "United States" in whatever language the page was displaying in. Fortunately, "Canada" was listed so I clicked on that and the page displayed itself in English. This enabled me to find the US on the listing and change the country before I proceeded.

If this has happened to others from the US who might have tried to make donations maybe they weren't as persistent and just gave up?

Good software, thank you. It suited my needs and did what you promised, easily and reliably. One small problem I encountered - it didn't like attempts to move its window to a secondary monitor on my Windows XP machine.

Dear Flaviano, can I use this on a Mac OS Lion? If so, how. Sorry.. not techie at all but this seems like what I've been dreaming of. xlucy

flavianopetrocchi said...

Tony Martin, I will try to debug the problem in the next release, for the time being updating to the latest java 7 runtime could help.

flavianopetrocchi said...

Sorry but unfortunately I don't own a Mac, anyway I know it should works like any other java program, try to find some help in a Mac support forum.

Bimonia said...

Directly executing the jpdfbookmarks.jar file, instead of the jpdfbookmarks.exe could make it work on mac too.

Get Java Runtime Environment ofr MAC from here, and install it:
http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Java.shtml

Things should work. Most java programs work seamlessly on MAC too.

Try and reply...

And, if it doesn't, use a virtual machine with Oracle VM VirtualBox and Install Windows + JRE for Windows inside VirtualBox. Things will work 100%.

OR Google: VirtualBox setup windows

Hello, there is a repository where you can find deb files for jpdfbookmarks, read this post or download it directly here.

Hi, Your software is really very useful. Is it possible to contribute by translating the user interface in French and how? I found a file in Italian but was not able to understand how you can switch to another language. Thanks,

flavianopetrocchi said...

Hello, thank you for your interest in contributing to jpdfbookmarks, try to read this post where I describe how to create a translation, I have now switched to netbeans 6.9.1 so I suggest you to use that version, but the procedure described in the post should work the same. It is important that you understand that any contribution you will give to this project is considered on a volunteer basis and no compensation is expected. If you are interested in sharing your translation contact me via e-mail and I will help you to integrate it in the official repository. Thank you, best regards.

I can't believe that you are seeing a lack of interest in this program. I absolutely love it. It is simple works flawlessly and does exactly what it claims to. I first started using it about a year ago and I find it absolutely essential. I just got a new laptop about a week ago, and this is one of the first programs I made sure to install on my new machine.

Thank you Trav, your feedback is really important to get motivated.

pdfbookmarks (ver2.5.1.) is a great piece of software, really help my work!!

My work is using the software to change the bookmark contents and structures. Basically, I use its command mode to fetch pdf bookmarks to a text file first, then modify the text file, import back to pdf .

I noticed two bugs:

1. After importing bookmark, the pdf document properties (author, title, subject, keywords, applications etc) are lost;

2. When the bookmark has text like 'uri' and a few other key chars, for example:

>>Urinalysis/40,Black,notBold,notItalic,open,FitWidth,-5

The bookmark will mess up.

Do I miss anything? Please advise.

Thanks a lot!!

I'm using the command line utility but it isn't compatible with some characters like "ñ", "á", "é", etc... instead the bookmarks show an "?".

Can you help me please?

flavianopetrocchi said...

Hello dinorhino, probably you have encoding problems, try to save your text file containing bookmarks in a particular encoding, for exasmple UTF-8 then force jpdfbookmarks to use UTF-8 using the --encoding parameter. Read this part of the wiki for more info.

I own Acrobat Professional X and it can not do very much in batch mode. Your program is invaluable for processing placing bookmarks into the 50+ PDFs I have to create. Thank you and I will try to donate later today.

Hi, i'm trying to create a pdf applying some bookmarks using the CLI executable but the command line returns the next message:

the program was unable to open the file

in this case the "file" points to the source pdf

what can I do to resolve this??

Anonymous said...

Are there any options for launching a pdf file on it's own window?

flavianopetrocchi said...

Yes it is possible to create a bookmark pointing to another pdf file, read this post for more information on how to do that in the gui, or read the wiki for the command line way of doing it.

Hi,

Thank you for the application! Is there a syntax for Collapse All for command line?

Thanks again

Thank you very much for this useful software! I use it extensively for large PDFs (non fiction eBooks/uni scripts, etc. that unfortunately still often come without bookmarks and thus slowing navigation and chapter jumping considerably).
The main feature I am missing is auto generation of bookmarks (based on header/caption styles - like possible in MS word and LaTex editors). Bookmarking 100+ pages is quite an effort/time factor.

Your software is -IMHO- the most convenient and functional in its class none the less! I wish you find the motivation and time to keep up the good work!

I create the bookmarks, set the destination, and when I go save, it stays in limbo!!! The bookmark tree stays visible, but the PDF view is lost... it just looks gray! What do I do?

Anonymous said...

Thank's for that great software. I use portable version and it's impossible to use the commande line, i always get an error. Is the command line depends on correct installation ?
I want to use the portable version because at work admins don't want to install this kind of software.
Thank's

I love this program, but it suddenly cannot load .pdfs anymore.

It hangs when attempting to open a .pdf.

I reinstalled the program, updated the java and rebooted the computer with little luck.

the computer being used is a windows 7 32 bit computer.

I had a similar issue a few months back on a windows 7 64 bit computer, but let it slide because I could work around it, but it isn't resolved either.

What else can I do to fix?

Thank you for this great software! it's the easiest way to create an index in a pdf on Ubuntu.

I tried installing the latest version 2.5.2 on Windows 8.1 x64 laptop, but it doesn't work. Any idea if this program is compatible Win 8.1?
