Dear Flaviano,

It seems that I can only insert bookmarks at the top of the page, not at for instance a paragraph (thus is necessary more than one bookmark on a page). Do I do something wrong, or doesn't the functionality exist (yet)? Would be valuable to add in a next version.

Having said all this, I must tell you that I find this a fantastic piece of software. Thanks!

John

Dear John, it is possible to create many types of bookmarks, for example you can select the Fit Width button in the toolbar and then scroll the viewer to the paragraph, then create a new bookmark and this will point exactly at the paragraph. You can also copy text from the page using the appropriate toolbar button and drawing a rectangle around the text, so that when you create the bookmark it will use the text copied. If you need more help please ask using the forum. Thank you for your message.

Dear Flaviano,

Good program, it is very useful, though I noticed that all of my Anchors and links (to Anchors within the PDF itself) are rendered. Is there a way to create the bookmarks and keep the Links in the PDF completely intact?

Thanks

Jon

JMMR said...

Sorry I meant "are rendered useless."

flavianopetrocchi said...

This should not happen, probably the links in your pdf are advanced annotations because I had other reports about this behavior with annotations. It would help me to have the pdf files to reproduce this bug, if it is possible for you, send me the files directly to my personal e-mail.

JMMR said...

It seems to be working now. I am using LibreOffice 3.3.2 under Linux Mint 9 to create the PDF files. I have noticed that there is a bug that is affecting this particular version as it creates a link from the Footnote/Endnote anchored in the Paragraph to the Footnote/Endnote itself. But the actual footnote/Endnote back to Paragraph seems to be broken.

That being said I think that it was Libreoffice and not you program. Sorry about the inconvenience.

Sorry but I don't think this feature is so important, you can drag and drop the bookmarks with the mouse to reposition them, or you can use CTRL+X to cut the bookmarks use the keyboard to highlight the bookmark after which you want to reposition them and then CTRL+V to paste them.

Anonymous said...

Thanks dear flavianopetrocchi...

I appreciate your feedback, and thank you for your kind reply...
I respect your decision on this...

But, as an user/fan/admirer of your creation, its my humble proposal that, such a feature would certainly add another feather to your crown...

Its already too good, but, it would be excellent to add that feature...

Again, your decision has to be final,,, yet I hope, you'll consider my request... A distinct button is probably better than using Clipboard (CTRL+X, CTRL+V)

Hope, you consider my feedback... It will certainly be useful...

Thanks...

Scrollbar would be handy...

Also, Buttons to Level Up (Move Bookmark to Parent Level) OR Level Down (Move Bookmark to Daughter/Sub Level) could be useful...

flavianopetrocchi said...

Your feedback for me is really important don't misunderstand my answer, probably I never thought about adding those buttons because I like to use the mouse for that. Anyway I will surely consider to add some buttons to reorder bookmarks in the next release thank you for your message.

I have been looking for software like this for years, it is exactly what I want, I just wish I had found it sooner.

One question on usage - I like the GUI, but I would like to be able to use the CLI to add bookmarks as well, and I am having trouble doing this ("Error: the program was unable to open the file testbookmarks.txt", with all required files in the working directory). Should I expect the CLI to work properly in the current version?

flavianopetrocchi said...

Hello alan, jpdfbookmarks started with the CLI mode so it is working in this version and in the previous ones. Try to read the JPdfBookmarks Help Wiki there is a section for the command line mode. If you still have troubles write in the JPdfBookmarks Forum and I will try to help you.

Dear Flaviano,

This is an awesome piece of software!! Thank you for putting this together. (I will definitely be making a contribution to DWB in the near future in your honor.) I spent several days hunting and trying different software on Linux and the (microcult OS), and nothing allowed me to prepare a file, and then import it directly into the PDF file.

Thank you again!!!
Dave

I was scared this wouldn´t allow me to make pictures/images a bookmark too, as I have experienced with Foxit Reader.
No need to fear though :D This is an excellent program, thank you!

Hi, David H,

Di you remember the donation you promised? I hope it was not just fake illusions... "

I will definitely be making a contribution to DWB in the near future in your honor.)

Dave H said...

Did I forget? Yes, actually I did. I will put a reminder in my calendar. HOWEVER, I am not sitting on a mound of cash. As the saying goes, " charity starts at home." Not only do I have limited cash available after paying bills each month (thus the reason for looking for free software), I also had to bale out three different relatives since I posted that; one of them twice.

So, I have not had any money to give to any charities or causes. When I don't have to help those who are the closest to me, then I will start helping others. DWB will be at the top of my list.

David, the Anonymous comment about your donation is not from me, I always use my id when posting. You don't need to explain anything to anyone, I know how life goes. Best regards.

Hi, i'm trying to create a pdf applying some bookmarks using the CLI executable but the command line returns the next message:

the program was unable to open the file

in this case the "file" points to the source pdf

what can I do to resolve this??

Dear Flaviano,

For some reason, everytime my computer updates a windows service pack, jpdf stops working. I can open the program, but everytime i try to open a file, it continuously downloads the file, and never opens. I tried restoring my computer to a previous update, but unfortunately, this update was mandatory, and i cannot restore to a previous version. Please help!

Thanks, Lyndsay

I have been using JPdfBookmarks for about a year and have found it an excellent way of editing bookmarks. But today I find I get an error message "PARSE ERROR" on every bookmark. Any ideas?

The software is not working on my machine anymore, I have used it earlier for some weeks though.

When I open a PDF file it just says loading and the file never opens.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT!!??

Your software is great so far. For some reason though, I am not able to install it by clicking on the executable. It simply runs the application. I have been able to use it through the GUI, but am very interested in being able to run it through the command line so that I manipulate multiple files through a single click. I downloaded the zip file, and was able to use the program immediately; I am simply not able to access through the command line.

Thanks for your help and the great software tool!

In light of the problem with SourceForge, mirroring the downloads to some other service and the source code to GitHub is appreciated.

Is this software has the "Select All" option for bookmarks?

Unknown said...

Please help! I read your manual and found that I need to Install but when I downloaded, there was not Installation or Setup but the program itself. Then I edited my book (about 3000 pages) and I could not save it. Is that because the book is so heavy ?

I have very often problems with your program in Java . The CPU gets higher than 50%, and the program stops responding. The created bookmarks are unfortunately disappeared. This occurs on all computers I work with. The Windows version don't matter. It happens with Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10.

I am using the CLI-version of JPdfBookMarks (windows) and it works just fine. BUt I would like to be ab le to overwrite the source PDF without a question being asked (y or n).

Is there a quiet-flag I am not aware of?

Michael Done said...

Dear Flaviano ... first of all THANK YOU for this fantastic program. I love it. A little quirk I've noticed recently is that after I edit bookmarks in a PDF, save/close the file, then re-open it in Acrobat Reader (or Adobe Acrobat DC), the PDF document title (from document properties) is no longer displayed in the banner of the Reader. It reverts to the physical filename. The document title is still there in the PDF file properties, but it seems to be made "invisible" to the reader by jdfBookmark. Prior to editing the PDF bookmarks in jdfBookmark, the PDF opens in Acrobat Reader with the document title in the banner, as expected.

Can you throw any light on this nad/or offer a solution or workaround?

Thanks!
Yours sincerely

Michael Done (Western Australia)
